This isn’t necessarily a Best Of 2012 list, but Laura and Richard summing up our ridiculous year.

Best Gigs

Any Seven Inches gig – a band who are criminally underappreciated and who don’t play very often, one of the best gigs of the year was the Seven Inches at the Fox and Newt. Ian was on top form as he always is with a homemade cardboard keytar strappd around him.

The Cribs at Leeds Met – all four dates we played with the Cribs this year were special in their own ways but this one was the best.

London was the first night so we were all terrified. Edinburgh was a bit of a nightmare trying to get ourselves a soundcheck and not stand up friends too. Brighton was the end of a 9 hour road.

Being the end of the tour we were all shattered but excited for the biggest gig of the tour, and the one where we had more friends in the crowd than any other. If you’re gunna fuck up and have a bad show in front of hundreds of people, better there not be anyone you know there to see it. But it was a triumph and felt brilliant to have friends witness it.

Sturday – we might go on about it a lot, but Leeds does have a brilliant music scene at the moment and this gig is just one example from the year. The Seven Inches again, and The Wind-up Birds, were highlights and Sturdy managed to not fuck it up

Our gig at the Brudenell – Dan O’Dell is a good egg. He managed to get loads of people down to the Brudenell to see us. On a Thursday. Costing a fiver! We got to put three of our absolute faves on as support – Moody Gowns, Downdime and the Wind-up Birds. The gig was ridiculous far better than we ever hoped for from start to finish. And our gig at Underachievers – a gig where we felt like popstars more than any other.

PAWS at Constellations – delivereda blistering Nirvanaesque set of great slack rock belligerence amongst hipster nonsense. A crack of light in a day of posturing and synthesisers. They are the best new band this year. HANDS DOWN.

Post War Glamour Girls at Futuresound Comp (notable mention to Super Luxury for funtimes) the moment PWGG stopped being a good local band and became pop stars. Packed out the Cockpit and slayed the audience with inspired, cacophonous sturm und drang. And Super Luxury kept the party going with party hardxcore, leaving the venue crowd surfing on a blow up rubber dingy. CLASS ACT.

Withered Hand in the Caves – after a slightly stressful gig, Kid Canaveral invited us to this gig. It was the complete opposite of the enormo-venue we’d just played with the Cribs. The show was spectacular and it was one of them gigs where you walk in and feel immediately at home. The ultimate independent remedy to the night of sexist bouncers and industry nonsense.

Best festival

Long Division – the first year we went as punters and this year we went to play and both times were brilliant from start to end. Its run by a lovely bunch and they take great care over every detail. The venues and bands were all top notch, there was a decent vibe (as opposed to say Tramlines where there was an apocalypse atmosphere by 10)

Highlights were Art Brut (which coincided with this moment)

Moody Gowns, and Kid Canaveral.

Sounds From The Other City – The Lovely Eggs playing to an absolutely packed room (including Maxine Peake!) and Cole Moldy being incredibly weird in a room above Paul Heaton’s pub were highlights. And the ABC Club in Islington Mill.

Indietracks – we were a bit apprehensive about the indiepop lot still liking us after some of our more mainstream jaunts, but we felt at home and accepted. One of the best shows this year. And we got to have Adam back on stage with us again being Flava Flav. Also got to spend a lot of time with Ed and Jim of Just Handshakes being hilarious and see the Birthday Kiss doing an awesome gig on a big stage.

Best albums

Our one, obviously. It was excellent fun making it and we’re dead proud of it. It took a lot of hard work and effort to get it all right, from the songs to the title to the artwork and everything. Being able to record it with Ryan and Seb at Edwyn Collins’ West Heath studio was a privilege and it sounds all the better for it. We’re overwhelmed by the amount of people who’ve heard it and the nice things they’ve had to say about it. And we’re very excited to make our next one.

Here’s Seb opening the £5 bottle of sparkling wine I bought him and Ryan – they wanted champagne and cigars for when we finished but in TMB style I got them a bottle of sparkling wine and a pack of Drum tobacco instead. I was too hungover to actually drink any of it after going to Joe’s birthday party the night before.

Falling and Laughing – Grace Maxwell – another thing not from this year but I read it this year so it counts. It is excellent and meant a lot to me.

Best things

Going to Maida Vale which was also the first thing we did as a band with Ben. The first thing you see walking in is a picture of John Peel. Ridiculous and amazing. And Huw Stephens was very nice too.

Breaking Bad – after much nagging from Tom, we got round to watching it. And it is brilliant.

Joe Daniel – despite being a shandypants, we wouldn’t have done any of the stuff we’ve done this year without Joe. Well we would have, but nobody would have heard it. He drove our video director Nik to Portsmouth and spent a day running round Leeds dressed as a bear. What a guy.

Hannah Botting of Owl & Mouse – Hannah came to sing on our album, despite us giving us absolutely no notice and no idea of what she needed to sing. She did an amazing job and we had good times hanging out. She also let us stay at her house when we got too drunk at How Does It Feel and contributed to Rich’s “Most Nerve-wracking Moment of the Year” by getting him to sing with Owl & Mouse at the Sheffield Pop Weekender, unplugged in a pub.

HDIF – Ian from How Does It Feel is awesome. He let us in to his clubnight for free when we turned up after recording and were in need of a night out. We’ve been three times this year, despite it being in London. He’s very encouraging and passionate and excited about music and has the biggest record collection we’ve ever seen.

Nik Vestberg – we met Nik properly this year, even though we’ve got loads of mutual friends. He came to Leeds to make a video for I Should Be A Communist and we had excellent fun hanging out. He kicked my arse at table football and we crashed a party and we made a video too.

Kroyd from the Wind-Up Birds - spending more time with Kroyd this year has made us realise he i s everything that is right about the music industry.

Ed Forth – despite the moustache and obsession with Scandinavia, he’s not your typical hipster. He’s provided encouragement, a lend of his bass case, and a kind ear on many occasion. The posh twat.

Kat Lowe – not cos she’s Daniel’s girlfriend but cos she is TMB BFF.
